FUNDRAISERS – TOWARDS BRIGHTER FUTURES!
In the diary now! Two fun events raising money for people from challenging backgrounds.
On May 27, international muso Sylvia van Weitan will host a Celebration Fundraiser for Bali Global Orphanage, a foundation that educates bright teenagers from very poor families. At Suly’s Resort and Spa near Ubud (Jl Cok Rai Pudak; the Ubud end of the main Mas Clinic Road). See full story this issue. Then on Saturday, May 29, 5-8pm, support the Opening / Fundraising Party for Sari Hati Center, a school for children and young adults with special needs. The event is a milestone for a group of tenacious volun- teers who worked towards the center for 10 years with minimal funds and resources, until Stars of Hope, their main sponsor, raised money to rent land and renovate! Come see what they have created to welcome, encourage and provide training for people with disabilities.
No entry but donations welcomed; a great evening of fun, music (2 bands), magic and food in their newly fi nished center in Lungsiakan. Up past Bintang and Fly Café (next turn on right). Call Oded 08123 90 5571 or Tania 081337 412 192 for more info.
NOW THAT’S KUSHY!
The latest project of the Yoga Barn, partnering with yoga Aryurveda specialist Uma Inder, is KUSH A yurvedic
Rejuvenation Clinic, which offers treatments based on thousands of years of knowledge in healing, from this ancient Indian practice. (Kush means happiness in Hindi/ Sanskrit …. it’s where the word “kushy” comes from).
Each treatment restores or works with the body in different ways. A Shirodhara combines herbal oils, poured in a continuous stream on the forehead, with a soothing upper body Abhyanga massage, to remedy mental strain, insomnia and stress. Whereas the Kati Basti pain relief treatment focuses on lower back and sciatic ailments, combining a traditional dough dam of medicated oil, a massage and a detoxifying steam treatment. Mmmmm. Open 10am – 6pm. Behind Siam Sally at south end of Jl Hanoman. Bookings 0361 971 236.
GANESHA MISCHIEF & BOOKS
If Ganesha is the God of mischief, why does he have a bookshop named after him? According to my parents, the only time I was out of mischief was when reading a good book. Quality second hand books drop into Ganesha all the time, looking for new owners. They come in many languages, including French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. Plus a collection of new Indonesian books, both novels and the photography, history and culture books that are great for gifts. Jl. Raya Ubud, corner of Post Offi ce road.
COUCH SURFING
New dictionary term. A great way to stretch the budget and meet new people, Couch Surfi ng (.net) is a highly successful variation of the international “stay at my house/ can I visit your house?” model that’s been around since some students started SERVAS (www.
servas.org) after WW2. People link up all over the world – and around Bali – to share their pad and their lives. And now Ubud is hosting some of Couch Surfi ng’s management team. Alas, they don’t have any spare couches at their gorgeous 3 month rental villa in Lotunduh. But they do throw a fun potluck and dance party!

fi ghters; he never went back to Europe. His once famous restaurant in Jl Kajeng has just re-opened after renovations, with fun gimmicks for happy hour (roll 2 dice for your discount), great cocktails, friendly staff who always remember your name and yummy, well-presented food. I’m Soup Queen, so I had both the excellent Sop Buntut and a tasty Mexican chicken soup. The new pizzazz comes from powerhouse young Indonesian business woman, Melida Weber - adopted daughter of longtime (German) Ubud locals Manfred and Karen - who leaves the day to day running to her excellent chef, while she works as General Manager of The Edge Villa Resort, next to Bulgari. Bookings ph 0361 975 699 (closed Mondays). Also check out the small art galley and the bungalows that still support Han’s Balinese family.
LITTLE YOGIC WARRIOR
Send in your snapped delights! In this workshop at Bali Spirit Festival’s family day, Duncan Wong - yoga guru to Sting and
Madonna - is clearly being put through his paces by an Indonesian star of the future.
LINKING ORGANIC FROM UBUD TO THE WORLD
How’d you like to be a “Visionary Founding Sponsor”? A social entrepreneurial website set up from Ubud intends to link all Indonesia’s organic related information to buyers and other interested parties. Small-scale farmers and producers often lack skills to distribute effectively to global markets or are reluctant to convert to organic without a marketing solution. CV Dunia dan Gaia is helping educators, project managers, students, farmers and producers. And like many new businesses, they need fi nancial backing. Visit
www.indoneisaorganic.com to see how 10 million juta a year can help give Indonesia’s small organic farmers access to knowledge, marketing and research.
CLEAR CAFÉ
A vibrant living bamboo wall by the footpath, the “feel at home” intent that begins when you take your sandals off at the front door, the zany interior – modern cathedral meets Javanese trad. Quirky, delicious food combinations, Tropical tuna with wasabi mashed potato and a peppery gravy, for example, mmmm, lots of RAW recipes, unusual vegan combinations, a very short but sweet list of over the top Raw desserts. No alcohol, but again an inventive drinks list. A lot of people are visiting this new spot over and over again. I’ve been to three big farewells there lately, for visitors wouldn’t have dreamed of having their last night anywhere else.
OLD FASHIONED FRUIT JUICE!
So many wonderful cafes with soooo many delicious juices. But it’s still worth making the trip up to Bedegul or one of the other
mountain fruits markets, to buy kilos and kilos of wonderful, exotic fresh fruit. Of try this little old-fashioned fruit stall at Warung Dedy’s in Jl Raya Peliatan. Still squeezed the way granma did it. Lishus.
