INDEPENDENTS IN HYNDBURN.

The forthcoming election on May 6th could well be a watershed moment for the people of Hyndburn. If the Independent group can improve on their present showing, and this is quite possible with the Tory group in disarray, then it could turn out that the Independents will hold the balance of power on the council and with this could come some radical new thinking. The picture shows the local Independent candidates Ian Robinson and Steve Aspin candidates for Overton and Netherton in Great Harwood canvassing on the town market with Independent in Hyndurns Group leader and vice leader Nick Collingridge and Dave Mason. Nick is standing for re-election in Clayton le Moors. What ever happens at a national level we will end up with the same two and four pence, but you have the chance to change things locally by voting Independent.

Why do women love cats? Cats are independent, they don’t listen, they don’t come in when you call, they like to stay out all night, and when they’re home they like to be left alone and sleep. In other words, every quality that women hate in a man they love in a cat. Weird!

The Commander of the fort received a message of an imminent Indian attack. He called everybody together to prepare them, and he called on his faithful old Indian scout.

“Tell me what’s happening,” he asked the old scout. So the Indian put his head to the ground.

“ 200 Indians are coming straight towards us lead by Chief Running Bear with his two mighty warrior sons.

They wear war paint and carry guns as well as bows, arrows, spears and tomahawks.”

The commander is very impressed.

“ You can even describe such small detail just by putting your head to the ground ?” he asks the old Indian in amazement. The Indian replies “ I can see under the gate.”

Born: May 26, 1919

Died: Mar. 5, 1980 Actor. He is best remembered for his role of 'Tonto', the faithful Indian companion of the 'Lone Ranger'. Born Harold J. Smith, at the Six Nat ions Indian Reservation in Ontario, Canada, to a Mohawk Chief, he excelled in sports during high school, and became a noted Lacrosse player, before entering films as a stuntman in 1938. After military service in World War II, he returned to films, landing small roles, usually as stereotyped Indians. In 1949, he played in the movie "The Cowboy and the Indians" with actor Clayton Moore, and together, they were both hired to play the roles of the Lone Ranger and his Indian friend, Tonto, in the television series, "The Lone Ranger." Silverheels played the role during the entire period from 1949 to 1957, winning respectability for Indians at a time when most Hollywood movies and television portrayed them as the bad guys. He reprised the role of Tonto for the two Lone Ranger movies, "The Lone Ranger" (1955) and "The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold" (1958). When the series ended in 1957, Silverheels found his fame as Tonto overshadowed everything else he did, so he continued to play the role in commercials, guest spots, and small bit parts.

The Old Ones Are The Best.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto ride into a canyon in hostile Indian territory. Suddenly they are surrounded by 500 Indians, all face painted, bows and arrows fully loaded, and obviously on the warpath. The Lone Ranger turns to Tonto and says. “ We’re in trouble now Tonto.” To which Tonto replies.

“ What’s this “we” ke-mo sah-bee ?”

A Few Caustic Comebacks.
