The Football Legend.

The son of a Belfast, shipyard worker he became one of Europe's most famous footballers. At the age of seventeen he made his professional debut with Manchester United. He was part of the trio with Denis Law and Bobby Charlton who led the team to the English championships in 1965 and 1967, but his greatest triumph came when, in 1968, he helped United to England’s first European Cup championship. Later that year he was named England’s 'Footballer of the Year' and the “European Player of the Year”. During his ten years with Manchester he scored one hundred and seventy-eight goals in four hundred & sixty-six games. He was dubbed the “fifth Beatle” by the British media because of his hairstyle and fame. At the height of his popularity fans would send over ten thousand letters a week. He died of liver complications caused by a lifelong struggle with alcoholism.

Never let the facts spoil a good story.

We were very disappointed with a local daily newspaper at the way they reported one of our jokes last month. Not only did they misquote our spokesman’s comments, they also misquoted the wording of the joke itself. They rang a local councillor for his comments but as he came down in defence of the Herald they didn't print them. The Local Herald is a fun magazine trying to bring a humorous and light-hearted look at life. We accept that this particular joke was in poor taste and we apologise to anyone who might have taken offence, but it is sad how some people try to stir up unnecessary trouble. We are, however, surprised and very grateful for all the support we have received from our advertisers and readers, several who posted their comments on the newspapers website. And to the sad gentleman who decided to email all our advertisers requesting they do not support such a racist magazine, we think the phrase is, “you need to get out more.”

Peter Crouch was asked what he would have been if he hadn’t been a footballer ? “ Oh, probably a virgin in a circus.” Oh... Sorry we didn’t mean to offend tall people. It’s a joke!
