Eric Morecambe Born: May 14, 1926 Died: May 28, 1984

Comic, Entertainer. Eric Morecambe was born John Eric Bartholomew in the Lancashire seaside town of Morecambe. He was one half of the legendary British comic double act of Morecambe and Wise (along with Ernie Wise). The double act is regarded by many to be the best that Britain has ever produced. Their T.V. show "The Morecambe and Wise Show" particularly the Christmas specials became a national institution, and the 1977 Christmas Show entered the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest British television audience of between 27.5 and 28 million. The shows also attracted famous names to appear in them, including Laurence Olivier, Glenda Jackson and The Beatles. Eric was particularly famous for poking fun at British singer Des O'Connor, who also appeared on their shows. The double act ended in 1984 when Eric died of a heart attack. He was Director of Luton Town Football Club from 1970 to 1975. ( Somebody had to be !) The all time classic sketch when he addressed the master conductor, Andre Previn with:

“ Look sunshine, I am playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.”

Gardening. I came across this poem the other day and it made me think of all my dads’ hard work recently in the garden only to wake up and find the snow had snuggled it in a beautiful white blanket!!! – Oh well, he doesn’t have anything else to do with his time but start all over again!!! "The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day. When the sun is out and the wind is still, You're one month on in the middle of May. But if you so much as dare to speak, a cloud come over the sunlit arch, And wind comes off a frozen peak, And you're two months back in the middle of March." - Robert Frost Many of you will be out in the garden now getting the ground ready for all those beautiful flowers and yummy vegetables. One book that is going down a storm (sorry for the pun!) is “GARDENING AND PLANTING BY THE MOON 2010” by N. Kollerstrom. Planting by the moon is an idea as old as agriculture, based both in folklore and superstition, but there are scientific ideas to back it up. The book is all about the earth’s gravitational field and new and full moons and how they help produce a better yield of crop. According to research the best time that seeds will absorb the most water is at the time of the full moon!! Gardening by the moon is one thing but gardening in the dark? I think not! For the more traditional gardener – or allotment owner - there is always “THE ALLOTMENT BOOK” by Andi Cleveley. This book will be an essential read for everyone, from the virginal veg grower to the seasoned seed sower!!! And don’t forget the little ones out there who love to dig big holes and get filthy dirty – “GROW IT EAT IT” by DK is both a gardening and cookery book in one. And . . . hot off the press . . if you want to grow exceptional produce then you need to feed them Liquid Gold!!! Carol Steinfeld’s book on the Lore and Logic of Using Urine to Grow Plants. Hope that’s got your energies running – now check your horoscope, look at the moon, nip to the toilet and get out there planting!!!!!
