Cause Magazine Kim has wanted to be a star ever since she was a child. The

New York based hairdresser finally got her chance when she responded to an open call to audition by videotape for a compe- tition on a reality based television design show on the HGTV network. At the conclusion of the series, “Design Star 2” which aired in the fall of 2007, Kim received more than 900,000 viewer votes and won the opportunity to star in her own new show for the network.

The show, “Myles of Style” became an instant hit on the network and features hip urban design on a budget. As the bubbly host of the show, Kim shows off her creativity as she consults with real people who need help decorating their spaces without a lot of money. Kim has no professional design training, but she has a real talent for it and often has innovative solutions to real life interi- or design challenges.

Kim was a hairstylist until recent- ly and never planned on being an interior designer or television show host. The 35 year-old was raised in Bakersfield California and had stud- ied theater in college, but never thought she would be on television until she saw the first season of HGTV's reality show "Design Star" and decided to audition. She said to herself, 'I have talent and passion -- I'm just going to go for it!' Myles, along with 10 other finalists, was

selected to compete in the second season of the show where ama- teur and fledgling designers compete in weekly design challenges in order to win the grand prize at the end of the season. With more than 900,000 viewer votes Kim won the final design showdown and the grand prize of hosting her own series on

HGTV. In addition, she also received a spread in the magazine In Style Home, a car and some good publicity. The self-taught designer and avid HGTV viewer was stunned by the unexpected turn of events which opened up a world of opportunity for her and made her feel like Cinderella. After her win, she declared, "I'm a regular girl who has a passion for design, and happens to be having an extraordinary experience on national television. 'Surreal' doesn't even begin to describe it." She was just someone who took a chance and ran with it. “I was built for this — I just didn't know there was a category for me until I watched Design Star!” Twelve years ago when Kim ini- tially came to New York after college, she had only $200, an Associate's degree from the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts and vague hopes of becoming a stage actress. Competition in the Big Apple was tough, and she discovered quickly that she wasn’t very good at acting. In a recent interview with the New York Daily News she admits, "I was a terrible actress; I was really good at playing myself and really bad at hav- ing to be another person."

She has always been creative though, “I do hair, I sew, and I design clothes. … I’m one of those people who’s all design, all the time.” Kim also feels that her experiences and background have prepared her for her

new vocation. As she stated in her Design Star audition tape, “I

absolutely feel that hairdressing is an extension of design. It is sculpture, it is architecture and it's craft. I like to have a sense of other cul- tures, I like for things not to be cookie- cutter. What can I say, I'm a New Yorker.” The City is a huge influence on her aesthetic, and she loves being sur- rounded by the tall buildings, the clean lines, the urban chic and the melding of a
