er, the colors and gradients are great; however, because the colors are translucent, the car’s base color shows through, changing the let- tering’s appearance. My solution: use both print- ers. The Alps printed an opaque white background of all the lettering. I applied the Alps decals to the cars and sealed them with a coat of Testors Glosscote. I then printed the colored letter- ing on Testors inkjet decal paper on an inkjet printer. (Note: The decal paper must be sealed after printing with a Testors coating so the de- cals will not dissolve when dipped in water.) I careful- ly applied the inkjet decals over the base white decals. The white base prevented the car color from distorting the color of the finished let- tering. The cars received a Testors Semi-gloss coating to pre- serve them and simulate a fresh- ly varnished paint. Lettering the cars was a tedious process but well worth the effort. Back in the day, Car No. 1
showed up in town a couple of weeks ahead of the Wild West show. The show’s agent and the papering crew arranged to put up show posters and spent several days doing so. While this was go- ing on, Car No. 2’s crew did the same thing in several towns sur- rounding the show town, arrang- ing excursions for residents to travel to the show when it arrived. Car No. 3 was an “emergency” car. If another show tried to sneak in and divert attendance from the Buffalo Bill show, Car No. 3 trav- eled to where it would have the most impact. No. 3’s crew hung more posters, staged a publicity stunt, and so forth to redirect the attention back to the BB show. Adding these cars to my railroad will result in some interesting op- erations thanks to John Ott’s ex- cellent artwork.
