Brass Erie Berkshires from Third Rail Division
O — Coming in 2-rail and 3-rail con- figurations, Third Rail Division of Sunset Models is planning to produce Erie’s S-3/S-4 Berkshire steam loco- motive. Baldwin Locomotive Works built the first examples, designated S-3, for Erie in 1928. Lima construct- ed a second group of these 2-8-4s in 1929, known as S-4s by Erie. Third Rail Division of Sunset Mod-
els will offer its Erie Berkshires to O-scale hobbyists as the locomotives looked in the late-1940s and into the early-1950s. Estimated retail price is $1,499.95 for this release, which will include modernized running gear and appliances. This brass import is
being promoted as the most detailed and accurate presentation of this prototype ever to arrive in 1/48 scale. The model will operate on 56-inch radius and wider 2-rail track or O54 and wider 3-rail track. In addition to this coming Erie
2-8-4 Berkshire release, Third Rail Division currently has limited stock of an Erie steel caboose. Featuring red body with black roof and ends, this steel center cupola prototype ca- boose includes full interior and sells for $299.95.
