Product News Upgrade for Athearn U50

HO — Originally delivered five years ago, Athearn’s HO- scale General Electric U50 diesel locomotive model will return for 2016 under the Genesis banner. Bought by Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, this 5,000-hp proto- type put a pair of U25Bs in one package riding on two sets of AAR Type-B trucks. Introduced in 1963, these big

blunt-nosed diesels

worked into the 1970s for both railroads. Athearn’s revised U50 will possess a Genesis-quality drive motor, plus operators will be able to select from a DCC-ready version ($299.98) or a release with factory-in- stalled SoundTraxx Tsunami sound and DCC ($399.98). Four Union Pacific road num- bers will include 32, 37, 43, and 50 and will carry “De- pendable

Transportation”

slogans on cab sides and a working safety beacon on the roof. Southern Pacific exam- ples replicate 9500-series re- numbering and will include a working Gyralight. February 2016 is the announced deliv- ery date for Athearn’s Gene- sis U50 release.

Return of Ye Olde Huff N Puff wood tank car kit

HO — A new production of Ye Olde Huff N Puff’s 29-foot wood tank car model is available. The craftsman kit presents scribed- wood underframe, wood dowel- ing tank, die-cast metal dome, wire railings, truss-rod under- body detail, and rivet bands for the tank. This $19.95 kit includes a scribed-wood tank wrapper and tank ends. The prototype is a late-1800s tank

car that is applicable to stan- dard gauge and narrow gauge use; thus, the basic kit is less trucks and couplers. For stan- dard gauge HO-scale modelers, Ye Olde Huff N Puff presents a $27.95 kit version with arch bar trucks. Bruce Ultch construct- ed the model illustrated; photo courtesy Ye Old Huff N Puff.
