the noses of the Pennsy, B&O, and P&LE railroads, whose law- yers squealed long and hard to change the rules. The rules even- tually did change, but not before the Y&S got its David-versus-Go- liath-like revenge. I used selective compression

to create my version of this 13- mile branch. For the loader, I cut down a Bachmann Plasticville Coaling Station kit to resemble more closely the one used at Smiths Ferry. The bucket loading crane (nicknamed the “Whirly”) that transferred the coal from barge to hopper took more cre- ativity. I used a RailKing Crane Car, minus the wheeled base and mounted it — yes, I confess — onto a Quaker Oats cylindri- cal cardboard container. Once airbrushed and weathered, the container resembled the poured concrete version at the real loca- tion. The delicate, white metal, O-scale Clam Shell bucket kit from Crow River Products added a convincing touch.
Motive Power, Rolling Stock, and Operations This is the shortest part of my
story. My locomotive roster con- sists of an Atlas SW9 and a Rich Yoder 44-tonner, both painted plain-Jane black just like the Y&S did. Other equipment includes seven boxcars, one gondola, two insulated boxcars, one flatcar with lumber load, and a caboose. This tiny gathering of rolling stock makes for a rollicking good time. I use a card and waybill system, where I spend many a happy hour switching cars to local industries or making a run to Smith’s Ferry and picking up some loads. Be- fore I know it, it’s time to turn out the lights and head upstairs, feel- ing mighty satisfied.
Power I use an MRC ControlMaster
20, which has tons of juice for all my needs. Simple DC. Two wires connecting two rails.

The Road Ahead Luck, grit, circumstance and
greed made the Y&S great. With time, all things pass away, and so too did this scrappy little railroad that did. Even so, when I turn on the lights to my dark basement, clump down the stairs, reach out and flick on the bright lights of my train room, the past bursts into the present. I hear the snarl of the diesels, the clang of steel against steel, voices calm and unhurried call out to me as a new day begins on the Youngstown & Southern Railway. “Time to haul us some coal!”
