how to sell Guernsey by Alan Orbell T
he 'second' Channel island is a delight for a short or longer break and it’s so easy to reach, by air or by ferry. It’s a relaxing easy-going place and perfect for a day trip to the tiny island of Sark.
Why sell it
It’s a beautiful and tranquil island, generally warmer and sunnier than mainland UK, very easy to reach and with plenty of varied accommodation – from cosy guest houses to fi ve-star opulence – and good dining options. There are some outstanding beaches, lots of attractions and opportunities for activity breaks. You can also use Guernsey as a base to venture on to other Channel islands or even northwest France. Right now, visitors can enjoy the Heritage Festival (see When to sell) and, for agents, Premier Holidays offers £5 for every Guernsey (or Sark, Alderney and Herm booking) while Airways Holidays is paying agents a £10 Love to Shop voucher for all Guernsey bookings.
What to sell
Guernsey is perfect for short breaks or longer stays and the island’s compact size makes it easy to see much of it over two
History is visible all over the island
or three days. Indeed a bus travels right round the island for just £1. Longer stays allow time for a trip to Guernsey’s pretty car-free sister island of Sark. Year round attractions include the Little Chapel – a miniature version of the grotto and basilica at Lourdes; the Guernsey National Trust Victorian Shop & Parlour; author Victor Hugo’s Hauteville House; Candie Gardens with the Guernsey Museum and Priaulx Library; lots of forts and batteries; the Folk & Culture Museum; and the island’s most popular attraction: Saumarez Manor and Park.

Couples of all ages and families are the mainstay of Guernsey’s tourism industry. Traditionally thought of as a destination for seniors where walking or a round of golf was about as active as it gets, recent years have seen the expansion of activities like cycling – coastal paths and the Ruettes Tranquilles lanes make this an appealing option for all ages – diving, surfi ng, abseiling, kayaking around the south
coast coves and coasteering down 300 feet cliffs. This has helped expand the family market giving teenagers plenty to do while the younger ones have the Beau Sejour Leisure Centre for a wide range of sport and leisure activities, go-karting, boat cruises, Delancey park with its playground, skating and BMX ramps plus, of course, Castle Cornet and its fi ve museums. Guarding St Peter Port’s harbour entrance, Castle Cornet offers an insight into Guernsey’s hundreds of years of island history and spectacular panoramic views back towards St Peter Port and the sister islands. Together with its gardens, café, shop and cannon fi ring with participants in period costumes, it makes for a great day out.
When to sell
Pretty much anytime as the weather is invariably warmer and more benign than mainland UK. The Heritage Festival takes place April 3-May 11 while September sees the fi rst Food Festival (18-27) and two-week Autumn Walking Festival (5-19). October features the annual Tennerfest festival that offers meals for £10/£20.
