april 2015 – dedicated to those who love selling travel –
INDUSTRY COMMENT “Our strategy is to stay more trade-focused for 2015, including reinforcing our
training, with more fam trips and more incentives. We want travel agents to feel more confident. We know that they can feel overwhelmed by the island-hopping aspect of a Seychelles visit and we’d like to offer more opportunities for them to see the
islands for themselves” Tinaz Wadia, Manager Seychelles Tourism Board
“The latest tourism figures verify how much of a success the 2014 FIFA World Cup
was for Brazil. The tournament provided a fantastic platform to showcase the country’s diversity and the welcoming nature of our people. We are determined to continue this legacy as we look ahead to the Rio
2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games” Vicente Neto, President, Embratur
Steve Hartridge Editor

consider him a member of the BMI Publishing team. That colleague is, of course, Alan Orbell. Alan was one of the founder members of
this company and this magazine. You will surely have met him at one of our many
agent evenings or other trade events. And tourism boards, representation companies and PR folk will know him from the literally hundreds of lunches, dinners, press conferences and receptions, trade shows and meetings he has attended on our behalf down the years. Alan’s been our Publishing Director and Managing Editor as well as the guardian of our editorial content for…well, he wouldn’t thank me for putting a timespan on it.
He has been responsible for, and guided us through, all of our significant projects over the years - from the early days of Selling Long Haul through to last year’s transition to Selling Travel Magazine. And to pick just two other examples, Alan made it
his personal mission to ensure our annual Visit USA Association and Caribbean Tourism Organisation guides are, quite simply, two of the best and most accurate travel trade directories out there.
Since Alan took the decision that he would step down
from his full-time role on April 2 he has asked the rest of us to restrain from using one word in particular. I can’t mention what it is but can reveal it begins with an
‘R’ and ends with a ‘T’. But that’s not a word that would have passed our lips

his month I’d like to use this space to talk about a colleague. Let’s not call it a tribute, because he is very much still with us! And goodbye is not the right word because we intend to
ensure he remains very much part of the Selling Travel team. It’s hardly farewell either because, whether or not he
yet realises it, we intend to see him regularly. In fact, wherever his future travels take him we will always
