ast year I was immensely proud to be inducted into the Women 1st Top 100 most influential women in hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism, a list which recognises those who act as ambassadors and role models for the female leaders of tomorrow. It was a humbling moment, made sweeter by having been nominated by two female colleagues I greatly admire. However, it left me feeling slightly uncomfortable – I didn’t feel I matched up to the remarkable and somewhat formidable ladies on the list, people I’ve spent my career shining a spotlight on – and, with hindsight, it made me question whether I’ve waved the flag for my fellow female colleagues enough. I’ve seen plenty of female colleagues in and around the industry struggle to find themselves, eager to project the right image for their professional ca- reer. Then there’s the F word. Get the tone wrong in the workplace and you’re categorised as either a psychotic feminist or a fragile and emotional wreck. Over the past nine months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Zuleika
Fennell, chief operating officer at Corbin & King. We met on her working party to pull together content for a female-only conference for the group’s staff that sought to answer any questions employees might have on gender equality, work-life balance and career advancement. The conference was brutally honest, empowering and insightful – much like her interview this week (page 24). Fennell works for a gentle organisation. Its founders, the PR-shy Chris Cor- bin and Jeremy King, are some of the most admired restaurateurs of our time, and their COO’s intelligent yet self-effacing outlook complements them exqui- sitely. Her behaviour also goes some way to explaining why she is rarely quoted in the press, preferring to go about her work skilfully and quietly, galvanising her colleagues and heading up the often imitated restaurant – and now hotel – group. As a person and a role model, she certainly gets my vote.

“I can’t think of any other restaurateurs apart from Huw and me who genuinely don’t know how to run service in a restaurant. If you put either of us anywhere near service in
our restaurants, it would be a disaster” Hawksmoor co-founder Will Beckett talks to Xavier Rousset, p30
