Initiative of the week
Greene King looks to recruit 1,000 Dementia Friends Pub company Greene King is encouraging more than 1,000 of its staff to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by becoming a ‘Dementia Friend’ before the end of this month. The initiative, from the Alzheimer’s Society, gives those who sign up as a Dementia Friend the chance to learn more about the condition and improve their
understanding of the needs of customers affected. The charity’s objective is to create a nationwide network of some
four million Dementia Friends by 2020 to help those affected by the disease to live better for longer. There are 850,000 people in the UK with the disease, which was in the news recently after the death of fantasy author Terry Pratchett, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and campaigned for the cause.
Charity event of the week
A batter option A special takeaway offer from the General Burgoyne pub in Great Urswick, Cumbria, has helped raise money for Comic Relief. If customers ordered their takeaway
on Comic Relief Night and collected their food wearing a red nose, the
General Burgoyne donated the usual £5 per head charge in full to Comic Relief. Craig Sherrington, who runs the pub with his wife Louise and is pictured here with his four-year-old daughter, Georgia, said: “We hope if people are staying in to watch Comic Relief on the TV, they’ll think about making their donation by getting a takeaway from us.”
