Plant Hire UK Ltd’s Managing Director

Graham Jones takes delivery from Volvo CE’s Dealer Development Manager Charlie Flaws

pting for Volvo compact excavators was a fairly straight

forward decision for Graham Jones. “We’ve been in operation now for the last nine years and since we started we cannot fault the Volvo product. In our opinion they are the best on the market and our cus- tomers request them specifically for their reliability, good controllability and user friendliness,” he says. “Furthermore they are very easy to work on and maintain and on the odd occasion when we do need help and support from Volvo, the service we receive is second to none.”

Joining Plant Hire UK’s fleet of equipment are six ECR88Ds, two ECR58Ds — both models being reduced swing machines and four EC27Cs bringing the total amount of Volvo compact excavators to in excess of 70 units. The ECR88Ds have been equipped with ‘City Pads’ rather than the standard rubber tracks. “We trialled these on the last batch of ECR88s and saw an immediate advantage with

them in terms of resistance to damage and general wear and tear,” explains Graham. “With the ECR88D nudging nearly nine tonnes it can take its toll on conventional rubber tracks and the City Pad option really enhances the performance and characteristics of the machine.”

The Volvo ECR88D, in particular, is highly regarded by Plant Hire UK and their clients for its economical use of fuel thanks to the combination of its Tier IV interim 2.6 litre engine developing 56 nett horsepower and closed centre load sensing hydraulic system for fast cycle times and smooth control. The machine offers a generous horizontal reach of 7.3 metres and a lift capacity of 960kg at full reach across the carriage. Operator comfort and excellent access to all the service points have added to the overall appreciation of the machine. The ECR88 Plus has a comfortable, spacious cab with a wide uncluttered floor. The

instrument panel provides operators with at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions and operator fatigue is reduced through easy-grip, high response joystick control levers. The rubber- mounted cab reduces whole-body vibration, and external noise minimizing the rigors of the jobsite whilst air conditioning with well positioned vents is a standard feature.

Plant Hire UK Ltd believes in keeping its expan- sive fleet of compact excavators, telehandlers, dumpers and complementary equipment fresh and up to date with a strict regime of replacing products when they get to three years old. The entire fleet is offered for non-operated hire and whilst the majority of their telehandlers are hired out on long term contracts nationwide to the construction industry in general, the compact excavators tend to be hired for short to medium term contracts within the north west of the country and within a 100 mile radius of the Haydock facility.

The company was established in 2005 by Managing Director Graham Jones and Financial Director Wayne Illidge who have jointly steered Plant Hire UK Ltd into becoming a highly suc- cessful business in the non-operated hire sector. Plant Hire UK Ltd is strategically positioned just off the busy East Lancs Road and close to the M6 motorway at Haydock. The company employs several mobile and workshop based highly skilled engineers providing a first class back up service for its clients.
