Co-op Membership: We Work For You By Austin Partida

You set up your electric ser- vice account with Kay Electric

Cooperative and you think to yourself, “That’s done. Now I just have to pay my monthly bill.” But the truth is we’re more than just a utility provider that you pay each month for electricity. We have more to offer – and we want you, our members, to know about these benefits.

There are more than 900 electric cooperatives in the U.S. that serve 42 million members. KEC, your local electric coop- erative, serves more than 6900 meters with 2600 miles of line stretching across five northern Oklahoma counties. So what makes being a member of an electric coopera- tive unique? We’re all in this together. You are a member of KEC – not a customer. And that means you have a voice when it comes

to the way we do business. Each April, which wasn’t too long ago, you have the option to vote for your board of direc- tors. These directors play a key role in making important deci- sions for our co-op, which is why members’ voices must be heard. We’re local. It’s likely that you know an employee of KEC. Our employees – your friends and neighbors – share the same concerns for our com- munity that you do. Each year, KEC participates in civic clubs, chamber events, fundrais- ers, school safety demonstra- tions, Youth Tour and makes monetary donations to numer- ous clubs, organizations and events. We’re not-for-profit. KEC,

doesn’t offer profits to inves- tors—we return money over and above operating costs to you, our members, based on electricity consumption. Annu- ally, electric co-ops nationwide return millions of dollars to members through this capital credits process. This year, KEC members received $551,797 in the form of capital credits. We’re here for you. At KEC, our mission is to provide you with safe, reliable, and afford- able electricity. We care about our members’ quality of life, which is why our employees 1210401

are continuously finding in- novative ways to improve our service. As most of you know, we have an active social me- dia presence, we’ve recently launched SmartHub, which allows our members to pay on- line, view hourly energy usage and report an outage on a mo- bile platform or your computer. Our operations department has implemented an innovative system allowing our dispatch to send service orders digi- tally and also have live Global Positioning System (GPS) on our vehicles, which allows us to strategically dispatch crews to outaged areas, thus reduc- ing outage times. Our com- munication efforts are solely based upon transparency to our membership. We will continue to look at new technologies and be innovative in our thinking as we move forward.

These are just a few facts about electric cooperatives that make us unique. For more information about KEC and the services we offer, visit www. kayelectric.coop.
