The Cellars in the Sky awards saw 28 leading airlines compete to win the judges over with their premium wines. BBT events manager Emma Gordon reports

THE WINNERS OF 2013’s Cellars in the Sky awards, celebrating the best airline wines served onboard in first and business class, were announced in the grand surroundings of Trinity House, London.


Organised since 1985 by our sister magazine, Business


Traveller, Cellars in the Sky judges the highest quality wines available in first and business class onboard mid- or long-haul routes.


All airlines are eligible to enter the competition, and can submit two reds, two whites, a sparkling, and a fortified or dessert wine from


both their business and first class cellars. Once submitted, entries are then blind-tasted over a two-day period by a panel of expert judges to determine the winners. A total of 28 airlines took part in 2013’s competition, Qantas receiving the greatest number of awards, winning


gold medals for First Class White, First Class Sparkling, First Class Cellar, Business Class Cellar and the coveted Overall Wine Cellar. Two airlines each took home a pair of top accolades – Emirates was awarded Best First Class Red and Best Business Class Fortified/Dessert Wine, while Eva Air received Best Business Class White and Best Business Class Sparkling. El Al collected the Best First


Class Fortified/Dessert Wine award, with Cathay Pacific winning the accolade for Best Business Class Red. ■
