sandramcclumpha realwomen fake it!

As Fake Bake celebrate the launch of their RealWomen campaign, GN meets SandraMcClumpha to discuss the latest technological developments in self-tanning, and how she sees the sectormoving forward.

Is it possible to have a self-tan that lasts on the skin for two to three weeks?

“Inmy opinion, definitely not. Your skin naturally sloughs off every five to seven days so nothing would last longer than this. Products that claimthis usually state in the small print that you have to re-apply every week, so inmy view the claimis just a marketing gimmick.”

Some products are also claiming they canmake you thinner or sculpt your body, how does this work?

“There aremany ingredients that can be added to tanning products that can improve the appearance of cellulite but nothing can actuallymake you thinner. Cellulite creams that are proven in themarket place have clinical trials behind them, or at least the effective ingredient does, so alwaysmake sure you research these first to see if they really work before you buy and introduce theminto your salon.”

Many productsmake claims about certain technology used in their formulations and delivery systems, do you think these should be explained more clearly?

“Of course every product should explain exactly how they work to back up the claims they aremaking.Women nowadays are certainlymore savvy when it comes to buying products and if a 'technology' is really a breakthrough you should want your customers to know exactly what it is.”

Do you think these claims that products aremaking should be put to the test?

“I think every product should be asked to explain what theymean before they can advertise, so there is nothingmisleading and so you can provide evidence of how your product can work. There are toomany play on words to fool the public.”

Who do you think should be asking these questions?

“Amix between consumer and industry experts. Therapists should ask the questions

to the brands; they are the people using and writing about the products so they are the people that need to understandmore.”

With all this talk of technology, how do you see the future of tanning?

“Tanning is becomingmore advanced in every way,multi-purpose products are definitely they way forward.Women are certainly time poor when it comes to their beauty regime so speed is essential and results are amust!”

There is a vast retail price difference between self-tan products. Why is this?

“The active ingredients (tanning agents) in self-tan vary in quality and price so you can make a similar looking product on the surface but its colour, smell and how long the product lasts on the skin will depend on the quality of the ingredients.”

When some tans develop on the skin they can look darker than others. Can you explain what is happening here?

“There are a few reasons, butmainly if there is a stain or dye in the product the colour tends to sit on top of the skin as well as penetrate; when this happens it can appear to look darker initially. However, when the skin naturally sloughs off, the tan can fade patchy.

“Whenmore tanning agents are put into a formulation, this canmake the tan develop darker. However, it has been proven through rigorous testing by themanufacturer of the ingredients that there is a certain amount of tanning agent that will produce the optimum

tan. Puttingmore ingredient in than this will not necessary produce a better result, quality ismore important.”

So how do you achieve a dark, long lasting tan?

“To achieve the darkest tan for your client’s skin tone it is always advisable to re-apply the self-tan over consecutive nights (if one application has not achieved the desired effect).

“Layering the tan allows the active ingredients to penetrate skin evenly allowing the tan to fademore naturally. You should always consider the natural skin tone of an individual before choosing which self-tan suits best and always apply the product that will complement the skin tone.

“Tans will always last longer if the condition of the skin is better so exfoliation and moisturising is key to any tan looking good and lasting long.”

How do you see sunless tanning evolving in 2014 and beyond?

“Tanning formulations will becomemore advanced with additional ingredients to give skin care benefits. Combining skin care and tanning will refine products and this will mean your clients’ skin care / tanning regimen will take less time but bemore effective.”
