nailmatters

Back then those that knew and had the knowledge of how to performgreat nail services properly, were few and far between. Creative Nail Design (CND) taught us how to do not just nails, but great nails, and they taught us how to educate fromthe basics up.These women educated a nation and there is a teamstill doing so to this very day.

It was, of course, the girls who truly loved to do nails and those that were willing to learn to do themproperly, that became truly successful. Many beauty therapists didn’t enjoy performing nail services and chose to continue with facials, massages etc becoming successful themselves in their chosen field, but over the 90s and into themillennium, it was a defining period of growth for the nails only salon!

my thoughts on now

Enhancements have always been ‘specialised’; doing themwell (nomatter what systemyou use) is an art. Anyone who thinks they can pick up a brush and do great nails in a day (even two / three / four days) is sadlymistaken – trustme I know this frompersonal experience!

The year 2010 saw CND Shellac open new doors within our industry, create new services and allow nail artists to bemore successful than they have ever been. Why? Because CND Shellac has allowed women to experience a service that suits their lifestyle of today; it allows themto wear colour for two weeks without chipping and gives themeasy removal with still-perfect nails at the end of the treatment. This alonemakes themfeel theirmanicure is worthwhile and worth the £25 - £40 spend!

What about enhancements? They’re not going anywhere because those that continue to wear themwant length and extra strength and they understand the commitment involved in having that regular three-weeklymaintenance.What we are seeing now ismore people entering the industry who wish to be ‘natural nail specialists’only and again – this works well if they educate themselves properly.

what does thismean to you?

Itmeans you have choices –more choices than our fellow nail artists fromthe late 80s /early 90s had, but choose wisely. Do your homework, read up on what is available. Decide what you want out of your career as there are somany different routes now available – the nail world can open up somuchmore than you think!

AlthoughMarian Newman started off as a professional nail salon owner and educator, she went on to define the phrase ‘session nail artist’within the consumer magazine and photo shoot industry inspiringmany others to follow; she still leads in that arena.
