Where we would once refer to the kitchen and bathroom, it is now often kitchen and bathrooms, with most houses today home to a family bathroom, en suite to the master bedroom and a downstairs cloakroom. Even most new-build apartments offer two bathrooms. This poses something of a problem


for the housebuilder, as buyers expect the same wow factor in three bathrooms as they did in one. So, if you don’t want to break the bank, the key is in the planning. “Every bathroom in the home is


important,” explains Angela Ortmann- Torbett, sales director West Europe, Kaldewei. “The cloakroom is often the only bathroom seen by guests; the family bathroom needs to be practical, well-designed and durable; while the master en suite is often the room where buyers want to see wow factor, with added luxuries like a freestanding bath and/or a large walk-in wet room- style shower area.” The problem is, of course, that in


order to squeeze in three bathrooms in the first place, space is usually something of an issue. So, while you many want to include freestanding baths and wet rooms, you may have to be slightly inventive. In the family bathroom, the easiest way to offer a practical yet stylish

space is to include as much storage as possible. “Adequate storage is vital to good


bathroom design – a fact well- recognised by consumers as furniture is the fastest-growing product type within the bathroom,” comments Duravit sales director, Martin Carroll. “Well-planned bathrooms should think beyond the obvious mirror cabinet to more stylish solutions to include vanity units below the basin, consoles with incorporated drawers, wall cupboards, shelving, mobile storage units on casters and even storage under the bath. Sound systems and infra-red operated lighting integrated into the furniture ensure that the bathroom is as luxurious and comfortable as any other living space within the home.” Robert Newton, building division


marketing manager at Symphony, agrees: “For the family bathroom functionality and storage are essential, which can be achieved without compromising on style. The Lindo Collection from Aquadi has an innovative design that provides increased storage space, a wide range of unit sizes, gloss cabinets and matching sanitaryware.” The problem with storage however, is that it costs money to install – something that housebuilders are
