BARANGAROO An old container port on Sydney Harbour is being transformed into a new $6bn precinct and waterfront park, which will eventually have 23,000 people living and working in Barangaroo. The 54-acre site is owned by the New South Wales government and the first phase, Barangaroo South, is being developed by Lend Lease, with British architect Lord Richard Rogers the master planner. The first release of 159 apartments sold out last summer in just over three hours, including a penthouse for $10.5m. Prices reached up to $40,000 a square metre. Barangaroo will also house the latest Crown casino complex. Crown, one of Australia’s largest entertainment groups, headed by James Packer, already has resorts in Melbourne and Perth that attract 25m visitors a year. Crown also owns Aspinall’s Club in Mayfair, London.
