Redrow ranks among Britain’s top apprenticeship employers

Redrow was the only housebuilder of the UK’s 10 largest to rank in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, a list compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service in partnership with City & Guilds. The list was announced at the recent National Apprenticeship Awards, where Redrow also scooped the Brathay Apprentice Challenge Community Project Award. The Brathay Apprentice Challenge is the official search for the apprentice team of the year, supported by the National Apprenticeship Service. Deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, and Tim Campbell, a former winner of the BBC series The Apprentice, presented the Brathay Apprentice Challenge Community Project Award to Redrow South West’s team of six apprentice carpenters, one bricklayer, one electrician and an office apprentice, for its work on summerhouse for children at ASK St Nicholas, a specialist after school club for children and young people with severe, complex or profound and multiple learning disabilities in Chippenham, Wiltshire. Richard Beadsmoore, Redrow’s Group training and development manager, said: “We’re delighted that our commitment to investing in the talent of young people and their training and development have been recognised with these awards. An apprenticeship is a great way to get onto the career ladder and this year alone we’ve recruited around 50 apprentices, while many of our former trainees have

gone on to build a successful career with Redrow.” Writing to Redrow, Nick Clegg said: “Apprenticeships are at the heart of our drive for a stronger economy: equipping people of all ages with the skills employers need to help their businesses prosper and compete in a global market. “And, as we work to increase the opportunities for hard-working young to people to achieve their ambitions through high-quality apprenticeship training, it is vitally important that we celebrate the achievements of employers like you, who go the extra mile to help their apprentices and succeed.”

Barratt builds foundations for the industry

Barratt Homes has launched a bespoke foundation degree in Residential Development & Construction for trainee site managers – an industry first.

Designed by Barratt Developments together with Sheffield Hallam University, the three-year degree will offer a mixture of classroom-, laboratory- and site-based learning, with students attending Sheffield Hallam for four one-week blocks. The foundation degree will be completed by December 2016 with students moving on to a 1.5-year top-up course to obtain a BSc qualification in Residential Development and Construction.

John Dillon, managing director for Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “This degree is a first for us and for the industry. Our site managers are a vital part of our workforce in underpinning the quality and sustainability of the homes we build. They are constantly facing new challenges, such as the increasingly technical build processes, so we’re investing in our people today for future growth.

“Barratt Developments has taken on 25 new trainee site managers as a result of this scheme, and they are already proving to be great assets to their divisions.”

NHBC Operations Academy recruiting once again

The NHBC has opened the doors of its training academy to new recruits for the first time since the economic downturn in 2007. Following a surge in new home construction over the last year, the NHBC Operations Academy is taking on new trainee building inspectors to help the industry meet the demand. It has already recruited eight new trainees, all of whom are in their 20s. The trainees will undertake a six-month induction

course as part of a 12-month training programme covering all aspects of building inspection, with a focus on technical training on NHBC’s standards and the building regulations. The academy trainees were signed up after the NHBC’s largest recruitment campaign for more than a decade, with close to 50 new inspectors joining the warranty company during the year. Engineers and building surveyors are also currently being recruited.

The job title of construction manager has been granted chartered status by the Privy Council, offering an alternative to the title of chartered builder, which is currently used by Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) members and fellows. Full corporate members (MCIOBs) and fellows (FCIOBs) who register their interest in advance will be able to call themselves chartered construction managers from March.

CIOB chief executive Chris Blythe said: “We are delighted that construction management has received the external recognition and validation that it so richly deserves. The title reflects the professionalism of our members and the influence they have on the built environment sector.

“Acting as an interface between disciplines and trades, construction managers are pivotal team players. Their contribution is critical to the successful outcome, as well as the quality and sustainability, of any completed building. “We expect that this internationally recognised title will attract a generation of newcomers to the sector, inspired by the variety of exciting roles on offer.” The chartered builder title will continue to be available, and CIOB members who wish to use both labels will be allowed to do so.

‘Outstanding’ rating for CITB

Education watchdog Ofsted has given the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) a rating of ‘outstanding’ in its 2013 Chief Inspector’s Annual Report, the only training provider in the construction, building and engineering sector to rank in this category. The report, by Sir Michael Wilshaw, said that CITB offered “consistently excellent training, high-quality facilities and support for employers across the country, whether the apprentices were enrolled directly with CITB or subcontractors”.

CITB director of employer services Mike Bialyj commented: “Consistently, CITB continues to outperform other training providers, both within the construction industry and outside the sector.”
