said Brining. “T ey don’t normally do this but when we had drought conditions in 2012, they turned to the trees and started working the sap. T at’s why it is so dark. T e honey they produced is called honeydew honey and it really isn’t even considered true honey. It has a higher mineral content and it is higher in hydro- gen peroxide, which is good for you. So fl owers died off with drought, but there was a silver lining. I like to make that connection with my customers that every year is diff erent with honey.” But not all aspects of the honey business is rosy. Bees are susceptible to certain environmental fac-


tors. Weather conditions, disease and even chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers can prove lethal for the bees and can cause the entire colony to collapse. Brining and his Gold Standard counterparts monitor their hives on a regular basis to stay ahead of any prob- lems.


“We are inspecting colonies constantly in order to


minimize problems. We don’t hire out the task of hive work to inexperienced workers. We do it ourselves, because we know the bees,” he said. Brining says honey is extracted in Pryor with


Oklahoma labor. It is harvested once a year at the end of the honey fl ow, which he says is usually late June into July. “We pull the honey, put it on the trucks and go extract it,” he said. “T e only non-Oklahoma aspect of
