Guidance on stair edgings in new CPD seminar

Luxury tile with high slip resistance Expona Control, Polyflor’s new flooring concept, has been installed in laboratory areas at the prestigious Rye St Antony School in Oxford. The luxury vinyl tile offers sustainable slip resistance when wet in accordance with HSE guidelines. The design-focussed 14 colour collection features authentic wood and stone designs and achieves the required slip resistance through the inclusion of aggregate throughout the wear layer. The tile is complemented with a range of inlay strips allowing for many design possibilities. Tiles and planks from the wood and stone collections can also be installed side by side to delineate rooms and create zonal areas.

Galvanizing protection for iconic building

Crittall won ‘Best Duplex’ in the Galvanizers Association’s 2013 Annual Competition for the hot rolled galvanized steel profiles and cold-formed galvanized steel doors it supplied during the refurbishment of the iconic Falmer House at the University of Sussex. The Duplex system provides a more sophisticated manner of corrosion protection. The galvanized coating protects the base steel, supplying cathodic and barrier protection so rust will not grow and paint will not peel up. Paint in turn grants barrier protection to the galvanized coating. The paint slows down the rate at which the zinc is consumed, greatly extending the life of the galvanized steel.

Tough carpet for entrance lobby The Cooper School in Bicester, Oxfordshire won Heckmondwike FB’s ‘Carpet for Schools’ competition. The school was selected at random from over 350 entries to win a Supacord carpet, plus fitting, to a value of £1,000. The comprehensive with over 1,300 pupils chose to upgrade the foyer/entrance lobby to its sports and performance halls. Pebble from the Supacord range was used for the outside edges of the area, which was inset with purple panels, to reflect the school and post-16 centre’s corporate colours. Supercord’s tough, fibre bonded construction means it is strong enough to withstand heavy footfall.

Preventing tracked in dirt and moisture According to BS 7953:1999, an entrance flooring system is necessary in order to reduce the risk of slip injuries, prolong the life of the interior floor finishes and reduce the cost of ongoing maintenance. The new Coral entrance system collection from Forbo Flooring is now effective at stopping up to 94% of all tracked in dirt. Coral now has 100% Econyl fibre across Coral Welcome, Brush Pure, Brush Blend and 75% in Duo. Coral Welcome also has a primary backing made from recycled PET bottles. When Coral is combined with Nuway, a rigid system providing the first line of defence outside or inside a building, a total entrance flooring system is formed.

Improved sightlines and natural ventilation The refurbishment of Abbey Grange Academy Leeds integrates subtle shades of timber cladding with Senior Architectural Systems’ SCW curtain wall and SMRFP frameless parallel push casement windows. In addition to providing uninterrupted sight lines across the elevation for improved aesthetics, the window system facilitates highly efficient natural ventilation by drawing fresh air from the bottom of the window and expelling stale air from the top, thus improving air circulation in the most demanding environments. Independently tested in a range of vent sizes, the openings in the Senior SMRFP system are restricted to 100mm, offering greater security and safety.
