HE UNIVERSITY of Cambridge is seeking main contractors for the construction of Phase One of its


architectural practices to create an urban extension to Cambridge and it now looking for construction partners for building contracts – ranging from £5m to over £50m - to realise the ambitions of the scheme. Building contracts will commence on a phased basis from mid- 2014 completing throughout 2016.

More beds for Imperial College A


£16.5M contract to refurbish and expand a student accommodation development for Imperial College London has been awarded to fit-out company Overbury and contractors Morgan Sindall – both Morgan Sindall Group businesses. Wilson House, which comprises a


terrace of 21 listed buildings that have been converted by Imperial College London to serve as student halls of residence, are being renovated and expanded to provide high-quality student accommodation close to the University. The architect on the project is


Berman Guedes Stretton, with Morgan Sindall overseeing the design elements of the development. Overbury will refurbish the existing student accommodation in Wilson House while Morgan Sindall is constructing a new development at the rear of the site, increasing the total number of bed spaces in the accommodation from 273 to 393. The new building will feature communal student facilities such as kitchens and social spaces.

£20M student accommodation known as ‘The Studios U-Student Village’ is being built on the former


Tyne Tees Television Studios site on Newcastle’s City Road, in time for the start of the 2014/2015 academic year. ElecoPrecast Bell & Webster, the supplier of precast concrete hotel and student rooms, has a £2.7m order from Northern Developments (Cumbria) to manufacture and construct 373 student accommodation rooms for the scheme. Once the ground works are complete, the new building will rapidly take shape as the structure and skin of the building are formed of 1680 precast concrete units that will be manufactured off site. First delivery is scheduled for October, ready for first fix electrics, plumbing and bathroom ‘pods’ to be installed. U-Student has developed and currently manages 600 student rooms in Carlisle and Sunderland. The company provides secure and vibrant accommodation ranging from standard study rooms through to studio apartments with prices for The Studios expected to be from around £105 per week for a standard room and up to £200 per week for a studio apartment. There will also be a number of specifically designed wheelchair accessible rooms. The company is planning further student developments in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh with a target of 3,500 bedrooms by 2018.
