Beal High School’s new building

Redbridge school to expand from eight forms of entry to 12

EAL HIGH School in Redbridge, which is heavily oversubscribed, is set to benefit from additional new build accommodation for a further 840 pupils, in the form of a three-storey building and sixth form centre. With a project value of £16.9m, the new

B

facilities will enable the school to expand from eight forms of entry to 12, and cater for a total of 2,500 pupils. Facilities designed by DLA Architecture include teaching spaces, a learning resource

centre, an assembly hall and a sports hall. The interior design will reflect the school’s specialism of Media Arts.

Natural ventilation A key feature of the building services works, to be carried out by Kershaw Mechanical Services, is the Breathing Buildings natural ventilation system which, together with other sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting, solar PV, under floor heating, and a combined heat

and power plant, will help to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and energy usage, and earn the building a BREEAM excellent rating. Electrical works include power and data; internal, external and feature lighting; and security, fire alarm and PA systems.

Replacing boilers using existing infrastructure

obsolescence, an energy efficient alternative was selected to complement the existing radiator circuits. Holyhead is a Business and Enterprise Academy formed in 2011 from the comprehensive school in Handsworth, providing secondary education for up to 1,200 students. The existing boilers were original to the building and certain spare parts were no longer available, so refurbishment of the heating system was essential. The three Potterton Commercial Eurocondense 500kW condensing boilers and three 800 litre calorifiers were specified by consulting engineers, Dodd Group and supplied by Baxi Group. The Eurocondense model was

specifically chosen due to the age of the remainder of the system and the required flow and return water temperatures. The boilers and calorifiers were installed in the ground floor plantroom and only pipework within the room was replaced. The plantroom is large with no access issues; and, whilst there are classrooms backing onto it, this wasn’t problematic as the new boilers were much quieter in operation than those they replaced. The three Eurocondense boilers operate with stand-alone controls and are not connected to a BMS. The calorifiers provide domestic hot water throughout the school, serving wash hand basins, sinks and showers.
