Sprung floor for expanding dance school

T Use of warm colours, tactile materials and comfortable acoustics

Encouraging activity and social interaction

recent scheme in the Faroe Islands, designers BBP Architects took an approach that positively encourages activities and social interaction. Torshavn gymnasium is a major addition to the existing municipal stadium. To create a warm and friendly environment, BBP used warm colours, transparency, tactile materials and comfortable acoustics. To help achieve this, Troldtekt acoustic panels are used on the ceilings and the walls, including the main room where a single row of panels have been spray-

PORTS HALLS and gymnasia are often cold, echoing and not particularly welcoming places. For a

from 100% natural wood fibres mixed with cement. Their benefits include high sound absorption, durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. The panels are particularly suited to improving acoustics in swimming pools, sports halls and public buildings.

More funding for Change4Life clubs

HE DEPARTMENT of Health has announced more than £5m of funding to encourage children – and

families – to exercise more. Some £3m of this is being made

available to the Youth Sport Trust to extend Change4Life School Sports Clubs to areas with the highest childhood obesity, building on the success of the 8,000 clubs already established. A further £1.1m is being spent on street play, and

another £1m on walking initiatives. Last year more than 100,000 children and young people took part in Change4Life sports clubs. One year on from the Olympics and Paralympics and the challenge is to turn inspiration into participation and, in particular, engage less active children in physical activity. Only a third of boys and a quarter of girls presently meet the recommendation for at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

HE AMANDA Restell Academy of Dance in Essex currently schools more than 600 children from the age of two.

To accommodate ever growing student numbers, the Academy has relocated to the former antiques shop at the 100 year-old Elmworks Studios building in Leigh-on Sea. As part of a full renovation and modernisation programme, a sprung floor system has been installed across the facility’s two studios. The Harlequin Activity floor is based on the company’s ‘triple sandwich’ construction system. This eliminates the need for metal springs and rubber pads and as it is a fully floating system with no fixings, it can be laid on almost any surface without preparation. Harlequin Cascade’s smooth embossed

surface added warmth to the finished effect whilst providing slip-resistance without compromising performance. The company also fitted the soundproofed studio with mirrors and wall-mounted ballet barres.
