Creating distinctive areas without solid walls H

OPWOOD HALL College has continued the redevelopment programme at its Rochdale campus with a £2m investment in a new student social space. The brief for Whitespace Consultants was to create a flexible space identified by the focus group made up of staff and students. The students wanted an attractive area incorporating a variety of zones while staff were looking for a space that would act as a usp for the College. The process began by stripping

everything back to basics and, over the summer break, an innovative modern space emerged. Once opened up, the size

of the space enabled the designers to create zones for different activities such as table tennis, pool, TV & games, along with an IT hub, comfy seating areas and quiet study areas. A detailed lighting scheme was introduced, incorporating LED ribbon lighting and spot lights to enhance the games area. Styled to reflect the College brand,

various multi-functional seating areas were formed to provide appealing spaces for students to relax in during breaks. Whitespace introduced fixed seating and height adjustable work benching with integrated power & data for online access. All furniture supplied was to be easily

Low-odour and quick drying paints speed refurbishment programme

P

AINT specification not only has to help contribute to the overall environmental performance of newly

refurbished buildings but also ensure a quick turnaround and durable finish. For the recent refurbishment of

Rainford High Technology College in St. Helens, led by Interserve Construction, some 16 other trades were working on site simultaneously and the College had to remain in use throughout. The use of low-odour and quick-drying paints was deemed essential in order for painting contractors to carry out work with

consideration for other workers on site and staff and pupils at the school. Johnstone’s Ecological Solutions range, which was specified for the scheme, is suited to educational projects being low odour and having low VOC content. In addition, the quick drying properties of Aqua Gloss assisted contractors in the timely completion of the work, which saw the interior redecoration of the College’s East Block completed within four months.

reconfigured to suit the needs of the College and students, making the space versatile. The contemporary colour tones complemented the modern design and were chosen to promote a stimulating look but at the same time be easily maintained. Contrasting floor textures and colours, along with the striking ‘cloud’ feature wall, helped to define zones and separate areas without the need for solid walls while the impressive floor to ceiling glazed frontage allows natural light to flood the area.
