Two-storey extension at Lowestoft high school
A
£4M PROJECT to expand Pakefield High School in Lowestoft is underway. Wates Construction has been commissioned by Suffolk County Council to build the 2,160 sqm two-storey extension, which will include flexible classroom spaces, new administration offices and a central ‘street’ that will run through the heart of the school. Designed by Concertus (formerly Suffolk County Council’s corporate
property services division), the scheme will compete next summer. The new facilities will allow the school to expand its current 536-student attendance, providing a facility with 900 school places for students aged 11 to 16 years.

A
£6M facility is underway for Newlands Primary School in Morley, Leeds. The new 3,178 sqm building
for the three-form entry school will enable it to expand its capacity to provide 630 places for children aged three to 11 years and an additional 39 nursery places.
The new building is being built on the
school’s playing fields and when completed the existing 1960s building will be demolished to make way for new sports fields, including a rugby league pitch, which will also be available for community use. The project, awarded to Wates
Construction, was procured through the YORbuild construction framework, one of three construction frameworks that provide a competitive procurement solution with added value for local authorities, public sector and third sector bodies and their communities within the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Civil and structural engineer JPG was tasked with exploring a number of value engineering options through the pricing phase and arrived at a re-engineered structural form which achieved significant cost savings whilst maintaining the requirements of the client brief. The site is situated in an area with complex geology and JPG’s geo- environmental team undertook extensive site investigation works prior to construction commencing. Completion is scheduled for July next
