The proposals form a critical phase in DMU’s long-term plan, built around an ambitious vision to re-connect the city centre to the waterfront creating a series of linked public open spaces through the campus. Identity
The appointed architect, CPMG, previously worked with DMU to build the Hugh Aston Building, which was completed in 2009 to provide a new base for business and law students. The latest design by CPMG focuses on visual vibrancy. Atrium spaces with open galleries will maximise views between floors and between departmental areas, contributing to a sense of identity and promoting
interdisciplinary collaboration. Large scale display cases are
integrated within the architectural design to ensure an ever-changing display of students’ three-dimensional work, animating routes within the building. Digital internal and external displays will provide a platform for the students working in digital art, while sculpture podiums and catwalks will offer an external forum for exhibition. The complex is scheduled for completion in 2016.

HE NEW Appleton Academy in Bradford, which opened last October, is the result of two existing
seamlessly three phases of learning; lower, middle and upper, in a single circular building around a naturally landscaped garden. Learners grow clockwise around the circle with the building stepping up in scale as they progress. Shared spaces such as the library, collaboration spaces and theatre are set as elements in the central garden. The refectory, cafe and staff hub form a portal in the outer circle, aligned to the panoramic views across the Pennines.
