Movable partitions provide teaching flexibility
OVABLE partitioning walls have been used to create flexible teaching spaces at the newly- opened Blackpool Gateway Academy, which caters for children aged 3-11 years. Architects Nightingale Associates and

contractors Eric Wright Group specified ten Dorma Variflex walls from Style Partitions to sub-divide the facilities. When the partitions are in place, staff and pupils enjoy high levels of acoustic privacy allowing effective teaching of small groups. For more expansive activities, the panels slide easily to one side to create spacious, open-plan areas for larger groups. The Variflex moveable wall was suitable because it easily accommodated the 3.7- metre high ceiling and also offered the school a variety of finishes to match the décor of the different areas. In addition, the sliding panels are effortless and fast to manoeuvre in and out of position, according to Style. With an acoustic rating of 57dB, the
Random lay tiles can deliver a cohesive effect
T
HE NEW £750,000 research centre at Chester’s Christleton High School houses a library, an ICT suite and a
resource room. The flooring design has played a key part in creating a stimulating and imaginative learning environment for the new building. Tessera Circulate from Forbo Flooring is a new approach to the design of random lay batchless carpet tiles, which consists of bold, contrasting, sharp geometric lines and organic curves with tonal blocks of colour. As a multi- directional tile, it can be laid in a completely random fashion and yet the modular pattern results in a cohesive effect once installed, as the circles randomly connect across the blocks of colour. Some 240 sqm of Tessera Circulate in the deep purple and rich violet Piroutte colourway was specified for the library and ICT suite and 72 sqm of whirlpool with its mixture of blue shades, was used for

Replacement The modular format of the tile provides a number of benefits including easy replacements and quick installation times, which has significant advantages for a school. Tessera Arran in the grassy green colourway, Kiwi, was specified for the staff room to complement the modern furniture and to add an injection of colour to the space. The tactile carpet tile takes the concept of linearity in an unusual direction, with a multi-height loop pile design full of visual interest and rich texture, creating a natural appearance. Unlike some linear designs, Arran can be orientated to suit the designer’s needs, including broadloom, quarter turn or tessellated.

movable walls ensure activities can run concurrently alongside each other, without undue disturbance. This practical solution ultimately saves the school money by using space as efficiently as possible and also acts as an interesting interior detail for students and visitors.
