Building design
DESIGNED by RKD architects, the landmark building features white granite cladding to all elevations along with elements in pre-patinated copper cladding. Arup carried out geotechnics and structural engineering for the superstructure consisting of a reinforced concrete frame designed for flexibility to allow the future conversion of the commercial office space to laboratories.
Additional heavy transfer structures were designed into the frame to span over the two large lecture theatres and 15m-wide pedestrian concourse to the adjoining stations.
A significant feature of the building is the construction of a deep three-level basement. This construction led to a number of challenges related to a busy city centre location, including the proximity of an existing railway station along with large ground water pressures.
