Engineering skills centre for the new Solent Enterprise Zone
A
NEW £12m engineering and advanced manufacturing skills centre is the first step in an ambitious £26m capital investment programme by Fareham College. The Centre for Excellence in Engineering and Manufacturing Advanced Skills Training (CEMAST), on the Solent Enterprise Zone, will focus on advanced marine and aerospace manufacturing sectors. Leadbitter has been awarded the design and build contract. Perkins Ogden Architects helped secure planning for the Centre and has subsequently worked on the contractor's team to develop the design in collaboration with the College.
CEMAST will be the first major
development of the newly designated Solent Enterprise Zone at the former HMS Daedalus site in Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire. Up to 900 students will study at the Centre each year following full time, part time and apprenticeship routes. Facilities across an approximate 4,000
sqm gross internal area will comprise engineering workshops, teaching classrooms, a learning resource centre, reception and associated facilities, together with services infrastructure, car parking and external landscaping. The building will create a positive visual impact to enhance the profile of the
College and act as a gateway to the wider Enterprise Zone. The CEMAST project itself is the first phase of a wider £26m programme to transform Fareham College into a centre of excellence for technical, vocational and applied studies. The capital programme recently received a £4.7m award from the Skills Funding Agency, which will fund 33% of a £14m redevelopment of the College's existing Bishopsfield site.

Wolverhampton plans new city centre Business School facilities
T
HE UNIVERSITY of Wolverhampton has submitted plans for a new £11m building to house its Business School
in the city centre. The six-storey flagship building at the City Molineux campus will provide a combination of teaching and social learning space and enhance the Business School’s links with the business community in the region. Dr Anthea Gregory, Dean of the Faculty
of Social Sciences which incorporates the School, said it was growing with improving student satisfaction rates. “Allied to this, we have increased the level of engagement with local and regional businesses through internships, mentoring and knowledge transfer projects, as well as recently establishing a new advisory board with a
range of senior chief executive officers from regional businesses.” Facilities in the new building will include
lecture, tutorial and seminar rooms, offices and a central social space and café. A full planning application has now
been made to Wolverhampton City Council. If approved, work on site will start in December with a delivery date of May 2015.
Wider development The plans are part of an investment of around £45m by the University to redevelop its City Molineux and Wulfruna Campuses in Wolverhampton City Centre. A new £25m Science facility, with the latest laboratories alongside teaching and meeting rooms is being created by extending and redeveloping the current MB Building, which fronts onto Stafford Street.
