Hub for collaborations in chemistry Renewable sources include solar power and sustainable biomass


Designed by Fairhursts Design Group and located on the University’s Innovation Park, the building will occupy 4,500 sqm over two floors. In addition to laboratory space for around 100 researchers, it will also contain dedicated instrument rooms, a teaching laboratory for advanced undergraduate classes, and space for a range of outreach activities. The £15.8m construction contract has been awarded to Morgan Sindall. The laboratory will be built from natural materials and energy required to run it will be met by renewable sources such as solar power and sustainable biomass. It is set to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Outstanding’ and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) ‘Platinum’ rating when it is completed in early 2015.

HE DEVELOPMENT of Chaddesley Corbett Endowed Primary School, near Kidderminster, took eight long


years largely due to the school’s location in the Green Belt. And, when BB Architecture & Planning successfully negotiated the planning consent, it then encountered cuts to the original budget. The project was challenging from the


start. There was no highway infrastructure on the site, services or drainage, and the budget didn’t reach to the high abnormals costs. However, when the school officially opened in July, it was with a design that encapsulated the aspirations of staff and pupils, and with additional enhancements over normal primary school provision.


Thermal mass A series of sustainable features and materials have been incorporated to deliver a building resilient to possible climate change impacts. The high thermal mass of the external envelope construction was achieved using Porotherm, a highly insulating single skin clay block system, while good air tightness prevents heat loss and conserves fuel.

Adopting an attitude of ‘pragmatic sustainability’ on a tight budget
