What Does It Take to Build the Future?

racing its roots to 1966 and a garage in Michigan, Jabil might have an entrepreneurial
model that is the reason the company has grown to become one of the world’s most successful manufactur- ing partners. The company now oper- ates over 100 plants in more than 30 countries and employs about 175,000 people. With revenues of more than $17 billion for fiscal year 2012, the company is certainly well estab- lished. But how did such a startup company grow from such humble be- ginnings and prosper through decades of economic uncertainty, ac- celerated technological change, and a rapidly emerging developing world? Company growth starts with in-
novation, with long-term invest- ments in technology and people, and with a vision for building the future with the world’s leading brands. That means finding ways to stream- line and simplify complex systems using unique tools and processes. As one of the world’s largest manufacturing partners, Jabil differ-
entiates itself through its people. As the company has grown, it has faced constant challenges to ensure that its
unique corporate culture thrives in new locations around the globe. The company’s history includes many
outstanding examples of teamwork, examples which continue to inspire and drive innovation and customer service around the company. In March 2011, Jabil Director of
Supply Chain Management, Jiro Us- ami, took significant risks to remain in Tokyo during a massive earth- quake which was accompanied by a devastating tsunami that led to widespread flooding and destruction. As conditions worsened and the threat of nuclear contamination from damaged power plants mounted, Jiro and the global Jabil team worked closely to minimize supply chain dis- ruptions so that Jabil’s customers would be unaffected by the tragedy in Japan. In fact, Jabil’s supply chain leadership worked with suppliers to strategically position operations to mitigate risks. The company’s history is filled
