he Leicester-based components company has created and added value to numerous projects by enhancing the performance of applications, while saving money and machine downtime. Bombardier, Network Rail, London


Underground, Sabre Rail and Interfleet are among Nylacast’s clients. The company’s materials and components offer many beneficial qualities to the rail sector, including a high resistance to wear and abrasion with a low co-efficient of friction of only 0.08, corrosion and chemical-resistance and high visibility colours. Nylacast materials are also lightweight, typically weighing seven times less than the equivalent component made in steel. Nylacast’s self-lubrication is another significant advantage as it enhances the dry running performance of certain components. It eliminates the need for routine and costly maintenance as well as machine downtime. With the requirement for greases or lubricants removed, not only is performance increased but it leads to substantial time savings and the cost of maintenance. The self lubrication and low co- efficient of friction qualities render Nylacast components particularly suitable for applications and components in the rail sector, such as cables and wire rope. It also increases their lifespan and decreases their wear.


Lightweight bespoke solutions Nylacast’s components for the rail sector include bespoke critical components through to a range of lightweight and self-coloured cable and hose clamps, which do not require painting and will never rust or corrode. With the unique ability of controlling the full manufacturing process from raw


chemicals and ingredients through to end components in any quantity, Nylacast offers full traceability and material characterisations on all products. Nylacast marketing manager Junaid Makda said: ‘Utilising the skills of our dedicated, industry-experienced engineers, coupled with a set of chemists at a fully equipped in-house R&D lab, Nylacast custom formulates unique grades of materials for more demanding and specific industry applications. The company’s research and development laboratory also features a strong testing facility, capable of testing materials to their limits to ensure they are fit for purpose and more than capable of delivering optimum performance in their required applications.’


Stringent testing Crucially, the analysis includes environmental testing which is used to ensure the materials still operate effectively in extreme climates. From freezing cold conditions to hot and humid conditions, Nylacast undertake a full testing regime before production begins in order to ensure the finished materials and components fully meet the set criteria for the customer and client. With its team of experienced engineers, and in-house CAD/CAM designers, Nylacast assists and directs projects from concept to completion, delivering the specifications, designs and testing processes through to material


certification and implementation. Whether it’s a reproduction of a common wear part or the creation of a newly designed engineering component, Nylacast offers a full engineering solution for both.
