Stannah’s revamp of Edinburgh’s Waverley station – the 24-hour mainline hub serving Scotland’s capital centre – is a showcase for accessibility and style
A
s part of a £130 million investment to support a burgeoning tide of passengers, Stannah’s major projects team fast-tracked an extensive lift replacement and refurbishment programme to create an impressive illuminated bespoke passenger duplex on the Waverley station roofline. One of eighteen stations managed by Network Rail, Waverley - the UK’s second largest in terms of area - is both a terminal and through station. Within a 33-hour disruptive possession, the refurbishment included the relocation of an existing machine room; the removal of a 33-person hydraulic lift and its replacement with a 33-person Network Rail approved two- floor semi-scenic hydraulic lift. The team also fitted an eight-person MRL lift as a temporary solution while the new lift was being installed, it also extended the existing two-floor, 16-person car park hydraulic lift and included a new bridge level and a new entrance to the station. As well as that, it installed a bespoke hydraulic passenger lift duplex, operating at 0.63mps, directly above the rail track. The Stannah major projects
team completed this 10-week project in just 30 working days and several further lift replacements are in the pipeline. Stannah project manager for Waverley,
Jerry Sutton described the installation as a ‘show-stopping feature’ at a station which boasts a footfall of around 20 million annually.
He considers the scene particularly
dramatic after dark, when the Italian lighting system – also installed by Stannah – renders it a futuristic relief against Edinburgh’s ancestral backdrop. Sutton commented: ‘While flexing operations around a hectic train timetable, we have successfully increased the people-moving capacity of this main line station by offering a comprehensive relocation, refurbishment, renewal, bridging and bespoke lift solution. Even when faced with a drastically reduced deadline we worked flat out, day and night, to deliver on time and budget. Of course, the floodlit rooftop duplex blazons both Stannah’s capability and Edinburgh Waverley’s emergence as a 21st-century rail hub.’
Stannah is very much part of the extensive updating of Edinburgh Waverley having already installed four lifts. These comprise three two-stop hydraulic passenger lifts serving platform level to bridge link level and one two- floor hydraulic goods lift serving the platform level to basement used by M&S to the storage area.
Access for All Stannah’s passenger lifts ensure Network Rail meets the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 by providing disabled people and those with mobility restrictions easy access to stations. The Hampshire-based company played
