IRO Midlands Area Events programme 2013-14

sustainable and future-proof railway for CP5 – and beyond.
Much has been made in the press about
funding for the railway in recent months, often in the same context as criticism of performance, poor customer satisfaction, high ticket prices and overcrowding. All this, at a time when demand for rail transport remains consistently high.
The ORR’s draft determination for
Control Period 5 is significant, not least for requiring Network Rail to do more with less. It explicitly acknowledges that a funding agreement for the nation’s rail infrastructure manager can only be properly made by taking into account the wider rail industry. This is a manifesto for collaboration and working together, for innovation and sustainability, for shared risk and reward and – crucially – increased customer engagement. Our programme for 2013-14 has a major focus on these aims, starting with a keynote presentation from the ORR on the Periodic Review for CP5 and followed by guest speakers from a variety of industry stakeholder groups including the Rail Delivery Group, Passenger Focus, the Rail Industry Association and the Rail Freight Group. The presentations will be supported by a look at a number of key schemes which are driven by increased demand and the need for more capacity, such as the East West Rail and Staffordshire Alliance projects. opportunities for visiting, and learning from, front-line rail-related business areas. Visits will include a train care depot, intermodal freight facility, regional signalling centre, light rail facility and the Derby facilities of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. Finally, we will be holding an informal

described how the factory uses Japanese management techniques of mass production - every car is produced for an individual customer’s order. The secret is a ‘just in time’ approach where the parts for each car are delivered to the assembly as needed and no more than two hours of stock is held in the factory. Members were surprised to learn that robots are relatively cheap to buy – equivalent to the employment costs for a year of a skilled worker.

STVA has always provided some road transport to supplement rail but the increased demand from JLR now means that many more cars have to travel by road. STVA is investing in additional wagons but finding more paths is a challenge for Network Rail.

Virgin Trains simulator visit
he company hosted our visit to the simulator, based at its Talent Academy in Crewe.
Inside the simulator, the trainer talked
us through the different controls, dials and warning sounds and guided each driver through speed limits, signals and throttle control. There were crew changes at major stations to make sure everybody got a turn. Fun was had dealing with the types of hazards the drivers would face, for example, putting a horse on the tracks or cracking the windshield!
Area member, Daniel Fredriksson said: ‘Being in control of a Pendolino was a fantastic experience and seeing the Bullring appear on the horizon as I approached Birmingham New Street was great. The panoramic views and accurate controls made it all the more realistic. There were so many controls to remember that it was tricky to get the hang of, but at least I didn’t have to worry about steering.’ Thanks go to the training instructors, Chris Leedham and Paul Owen. •
