Similarly, company websites and technical data or manuals can contain identical sections which only need translating once. This technology ensures greater consistency across large documentation projects and can significantly reduce both translation costs and delivery times. The company is in the process of developing a machine translation (MT) service. This technology is based on an MT-Engine – effectively a vast database of legacy translations from the relevant industry sector – which is primed with the client’s own legacy translations and preferred terminology. AST then offers a human post-editing service to correct any translation errors arising in the machine processing stage. Benefits of MT are rapid turnarounds even for very high volumes of text and significant cost savings over the equivalent human translation. Andrew said: ‘All our client data is securely stored and maintained on our onsite servers. We don’t use cloud storage for sensitive client documentation. We also have extremely rigorous data backup procedures, making data loss due to unforeseen circumstances almost

Case study


A German manufacturer of rail fastening systems needed a selection of product brochures and product data sheets translating into six European languages plus Chinese, Japanese and Korean within a maximum of two weeks. In all there were 24 documents of 3-8 pages each. The fastening systems are designed for both slab track and conventional ballasted track and are produced bespoke for the varying rail environments and project


requirements within each country. Using its rail sector multilingual term base combined with sector, patent and competitor research, AST was able to use the correct terminology in the nine languages for the different product types and their technical operating environments.


The project was turned around in eight working days, giving the client two days for in-country proofing of the translations. The client’s verdict according to Schlich: ‘Translations and terminology used were more or less spot on. We were relieved that so few corrections had to be
