The panels are manufactured from stud fixed, powder- coated, 5mm aluminium plate, with applied vinyl graphics. ‘We also installed vitreous enamel platform identifiers at the top of each of the staircases which run down to the platforms and colour-coded, vitreous enamel name strips running the full length of both platforms. The vitreous enamel strips measured 1200mm long by 300mm deep and were grouted into the ceramic-tiled station walls,’ continued Jeal.

The project ran smoothly throughout, and all deadlines were met.’

Project: Hillhead Subway Station, Glasgow


Hillhead was the first subway station to be upgraded as part of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport’s plan to modernise the fifteen stations on its Glasgow network. Working alongside Clancy Docwra, Wood&Wood were commissioned to provide internal and external signage.


The station is the one of the busiest on the Glasgow system, with 1.86 million boardings per year.


The new external signage was designed to give the station a cleaner, more modern look. Wood&Wood manufactured and installed external fascia panels to the entrance, produced from powder-


specification and are Class 0 fire rated. The signage scheme consists of a range of wayfinding and platform information signs for use by the expected six million passengers a year. The platform signs were constructed using honeycomb core aluminium panels and extruded stainless steel with suspended fixings to withstand the air pressures generated by the trains. The platform signs complement the internal vitreous signs bearing the station’s yellow and black livery, which is consistently carried across all media.
