• le tour 2013 goes coconuts Broken ribs and Canadian coconuts
Sport has long been a great source of odd phrases and exclamations, not least cycling and more specifically this year’s Tour de France when David Millar tweeted that Ryder Hesjedal had branded this year’s Le Tour as having “gone coconuts”. This Tour has indeed been regarded as more eventful than 2012’s edition by the media at least and it has seen Hesjedal himself manfully ride on despite having broken ribs (though Geraint Thomas has gone one ‘better’ by riding with a fractured pelvis). Broken ribs aside, this year has seen Hesjedal cut a dash with eyewear (pictured) courtesy of new sponsorship partner Swedish eyewear firm POC (coconuts not pictured).

29,968km over 150 days?
Liz Dimmock has ditched the high-flying business suit in favour of lycra for an intimidating cycle challenge – to become the fastest woman in history to circumnavigate the world by bicycle, cycling 29,968km over 150 days. Should she complete the huge task, Dimmock will become a Guinness World Record. The rise will see her start in Istanbul and ride through 22 countries (including Blighty) while raising money for the War Child charity in the process. With a strong background in blue chip business development, savvy Dimmock has got BikeBiz Award Competition Partner Cycleguard to provide specialist insurance for the bikes and cycle accessories needed for the trip. united in the city
Gold medallist Joanna Rowsell and stars from popular soap Emmerdale (formerly of ‘Farm’ fame) were among the 8,000 riders taking part in the Great Manchester Cycle. The popular ride, taking place over closed roads in the city, is another event that is appealing to avid and novice riders, with 13, 26 and 52 mile options available on the day. Keen to keep up the momentum, the dates have already been set for 2014’s ride, which rolls into action on Sunday 29th June 2014.

Hinault tackles the Pennines
It’s not everyday a bona fide cycle legend like Bernard Hinault rides one of your bikes and compliments the aforementioned machine. Hinault was over in the UK with Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme promoting the Yorkshire leg of next year’s race when he hopped onto one of Pennine Cycles’ own made-in-Bradford bikes for a photo shoot at Leeds Town Hall. According to Pennine Cycles’ Paul and Sandra Corcoran, Hinault “had a good inspection, finally giving it the Hinault seal of approval. He was also very happy our bikes had Michelin tyres from his French homeland.” Needless to say, that went down well with the retailer.
