Friedrichshafen OutDoor Show celebrates 20th anniversary
Upbeat industry meet finds almost half of traders think outdoor economy is improving following the damagingly protracted winter Reisinger becomes head of OutDoor and Eurobike
By Jonathon Harker
JULY’S UBER large global outdoor show OutDoor saw 21,465 trade visitors attend from 93 countries. The Friedrichshafen show, set in the same halls and organised by the same company behind the huge Eurobike expo, was celebrating its 20th year. Outdoor water sports
returned to OutDoor for the first time in a number of years and journalist numbers were on the up – at 1,042 from 1,019 in 2012. The 2013 also saw growth in non- European countries attending, including Chile, USA, India and Indonesia. However, like the bicycle market, the outdoor industry has suffered with a cold and wet spring. The European Outdoor Group (EOG),
which holds its annual summer meeting the day before the show in Friedrichshafen, saw 80 senior figures from the European
outdoor industry discuss the state of the industry. EOG secretary general Mark Held said: “With the economy constantly in the news, there was a degree of uncertainty as to what the Outdoor 2013 would bring. The answer is confirmation that the weather still plays a crucial role in the fortunes of our industry and whilst the economic conditions have been challenging in the first half of 2013, the mood of the industry is still positive and there is still growth to look forward to.” A survey of trade visitors found that 44 per cent thought the industry was strengthening, while 34 per cent said it was stable.
As of December 2013, Stefan Reisinger
– formerly project director of Eurobike – has become ‘Head of OutDoor/Eurobike’, while Dirk Heidrich has been named project director of OutDoor/Eurobike. OutDoor returns on July 10th to 13th next year.
