IBDs called on to back new Cycle to Work Day

C2W provider pledges to increase footfall into independent bike dealers through Cycle to Work Day activities  Put September 12th in your diaries

By Jonathon Harker

“We have made steps forward, but I think 2015 is when I’ll feel we’re bringing true differentiation in there. That’s bloody difficult to achieve in the bike market. If you look at the German market particularly, the refinements in aesthetics that German lifestyle bikes have is something we can bring to the UK market. I don’t mean transplanting German specifics into the UK market, but the use of new materials to add to a product and give it a distinct personality…I think we’re on the way. We want people to be able to say ‘that’s a Raleigh bike’, not a Giant, or a Ridgeback…that’s the mission of the team. “Having Haibike in the range gets us back to that credible one-stop-shop status.” For more turn to page 20.

CYCLESCHEME IS calling on its network of independent UK cycle retailers to work together with them to promote Cycle to Work Day on September 12th. Cycle to Work Day is being supported

by British Cycling, Sustrans, Bicycle Association, Business in the Community and championed by Dame Sarah Storey. Cyclescheme has invited shops to

offer free bike health checks during the week (commencing September 7th) and in return the company pledges to increase footfall into IBDs as part of its Cycle to Work Day activities. Cyclescheme has already teamed up

with a number of its retail partners to offer the free bike health checks, because the company wants to ensure people are riding bikes in top condition to work on that day and to encourage everyone to have their bike checked in

preparation. While there is no actual work to be carried out on the bike as part of the free health check, the health checks give shops a chance to offer a professional assessment of the bike’s condition, plus any recommendations with regards to parts or labour. Cyclescheme said: “The health check is

free to encourage the consumer in to your shop – any parts or work carried out is chargeable to help create

incremental sales and future business. “Cyclescheme will be working

particularly hard with its army of 30,000 employers to generate footfall to retailers at the beginning of September.” “The new Cycle to Work Day website

goes live at the start of August and will house free resources for retailers, employers and cyclists. To ensure that you are sent a window sticker and some flyers, or if you just want to be noted as a store that is taking part, all you need to do is fill in this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com /s/P72ZMNR.” Cyclescheme said it wants to see an

increase on the 760,000 people who now cycle to work regularly (up from 110,000 in 2001, according to Census data) with a long-term ambition of hitting one million regular cycle commuters by 2021. Cyclescheme: 0844 879 5101

Yorkshire Grand Depart worth £100m By Jonathon Harker

FOLLOWING FROOME’S Le Tour win, the attention of the cycle world is turning to next year’s UK stages. Estimates predict Yorkshire’s Grand

Depart could be worth around £100m to the county alone, while three million have been predicted to line the route during two days of racing. Yorkshire tourism saw a year-on-year spend rise up 47 per cent following the announcement. While focusing in Yorkshire, the Tour de

France will, for Stage Three, start in Cambridge and end on the Mall, London. Retailers and businesses planning to

grab a share of that predicted £100m have been warned that they will have to tread a fine line when they tie-in to the

Tour de France next year, in order to avoiding falling foul of strict IP and copyright laws. Not using the Tour de France logo,

brand or phrases is advised, with Rebecca Kelly, associate at hlw Keeble Hawson solicitors recommending that the ASO is contacted by shops planning activity to ensure there are no infringements or potentially costly fall-out. There are more tips on the topic for bicycle businesses here: http://tinyurl.com/ndba2dx Christian Prudhomme, director of the

Tour de France, said: “It has been a memorable 100th edition of Le Tour this year and what better way to follow a British winner than for it to begin in the UK in Yorkshire next year. We saw how

passionate Yorkshire was about hosting the Grand Depart and we are confident it will be a wonderful spectacle.” The UK Le Tour stages will take place
