Deuville and its racecourse peep through the woodland. Just an errant sand-wedge away from the 18th pin stands the mock- medieval looking Hotel Golf du Barriere. Classy but informal, with a top restaurant, Le Lassay, and Le Green bar, which is rich with comfy darkened French oak furnishings, the hotel is a favourite with UK golfers. History and top-class golf mix seamlessly at the two-course Golf d’Omaha Beach. The new Manor course is an enjoyable track, with a mixture of water features, elevated
teeing areas and clusters of trees, but most visiting golfers will want to play Golf d’Omaha Beach’s excellent seaside course. The green of the spectacular sixth hole balances on the edge of cliffs overlooking the town and harbour of Port-en-Bessin, with superb views of reminders of the D-Day Landings: the artifi cial port at Arromanches and the artillery bunkers at Longues-sur-Mer. The 18 holes are each named after the decision-makers at D-Day, such as Eisenhower, Churchill and Patton. The beers often fl ow at the 19th
hole, but for an alternative ask for the regional speciality Calvados, an apple brandy taken as an aperitif, or Pommeau, a mix of Calvados and cider or apple juice.
