Wellness trends: Fertility EXPERT OPINION

Marilyn Glenville PhD Leading UK nutritionist

“It is extremely important for a couple to look at their diet at least three months before trying for a baby. This is the approximate time it takes to improve the quality of a woman’s eggs. A good diet can boost fertility and correct hormone imbalances that may affect a couple’s ability to conceive and the likelihood of miscarriage. “A spa can be a good environment

in which to concentrate on diet and lifestyle issues in an intensive way, to kick-start important changes that can help a couple to conceive. “I think it is important that the

programme is run by qualified professionals who have specific experience in fertility rather than just general health.”

The therapeutic properties of the thermal springs at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, situated at the foot of the Alps in eastern Switzerland, have been benefiting visitors since the 13th century. Part of the Healing Hotels of the World partnership, a recent CHF 4.4 million investment has enhanced its reputation as a comprehensive health and spa resort. The luxurious 36.5° Wellbeing and Thermal Spa – at 12,800sqm one of the largest in Europe – is accompanied by a medical centre which offers around 70 specialists and includes gynaecology and fertility among its focus areas. “While many of our guests come for pure relaxation, we’ve seen a big increase in those seeking wellbeing and health,” says Kathrin Boerger, director of marketing.

Professor Rolf A. Steiner, MD Medical specialist, Bad Ragaz

Conceiving of conception “We deal with the full spectrum of fertility problems and, of course, all aspects of gynaecological oncology,” explains Professor Rolf Steiner MD, who heads up the spa’s fertility clinic. In the field of assisted reproductive technology, Bad Ragaz works closely with specialist clinics such as the Zurich University Hospital, but the emotional aspect is not neglected. “It is important for the body and mind to be in harmony so that they can have a positive impact on conception,” says Prof Steiner. “Here in Bad Ragaz, we run a complete programme to promote inner beauty and wellbeing – an excellent precondition for becoming pregnant.”

Neil Shah

Founder The Stress Management Society

“Stress is a common factor in infertility issues – the body goes into a state of survival when very stressed and our ability to conceive massively diminishes. “A spa can be a wonderful

environment in which to de-stress and relax and it can be extremely useful to have time out in such an environment to simply learn the art of relaxation. “It can be a great place in which to

learn how to increase your long-term resilience to stress and with the help of effective techniques and natural products, such as Rescue Remedy, to get used to relaxing daily.”
