previously owned by the council, came up for sale, it was actually our chairman’s late wife who pushed to purchase it,” he reveals. “We then had a lengthy series of discussions about what to do with the house. The owners felt strongly that the time was right to create a destination spa. We worked incredibly hard to get the offering right and I believe it was an inspired decision.”

Natural hospitality With Newmarket’s racing heritage reflected in finishes such as the horsehair wall panels in the reception, spa manager Anna Ramsay says the light and airy spa has been created to be an ‘intimate and personal retreat.’ Subtle shades of the lavender that surrounds the property and grows abundantly in the region are used to establish the spa’s identity; the colour can be seen in the treatment menu and even in the complimentary macaroons, as well as in planters in the meditative walkway leading to the spa’s entrance. for 15 years and has been an ISPA board member, the creation of a naturally hospitable spa was paramount. “I’m immersed in the whole ethos of spa and I really appreciate what it is fundamentally about,” he says.

“For me, ‘spa’ has an absolute synergy with hospitality, in the sense that you have to understand it is all about the guest and putting their needs first.”

Building on history Co-created by Review Hotels and A Squared Architects in partnership with Trevillion Interiors, the spa’s design ethos centred around providing a relaxed, country house feel with a soft, muted and neutral palette used throughout. “The new spa required the complete renovation and conversion of the large Victorian house, as well as the design and construction of a new extension for a hydrotherapy pool, steam and sauna rooms and experience showers,” explains A Squared’s Paul Abbott. “The extension has been created in the style of a Victorian orangery, with materials and proportions chosen to match the existing building. This blends period traditional with contemporary modern styles and is then carried through into the interior design.”
