Wellness trends: Fertility

Champneys Tring

Champneys Tring, in Hertfordshire has become one of the first UK health resorts to team up with a dedicated IVF clinic – the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre (ARGC) in London – to offer its guests access to expert wellness advice when undergoing or considering IVF. The spa, founded in 1925, is housed in a magnificent stately home that once belonged to the Rothschild family and offers 91 luxurious bedrooms, 56 treatment rooms and its own medical centre. The ARGC fertility treatment lasts for 14 days and, until recently, was only available at its central London clinic. However, since October 2012, Champneys Tring has offered women the opportunity to undergo the monitoring phase of the treatment – which can last for approximately 12 days – as outpatients during day visits or residential stays at the resort.

Tranquility at a testing time During this often-stressful time, the spa provides the perfect environment in which to relax before and after treatments, says wellness director Louise Day. “Generally, being in a spa environment is very appealing to women undergoing fertility treatment. The constant testing of the assisted pathway can be very stressful, so to be able to provide such diagnostics under one roof in calm, tranquil

surroundings is a huge advantage,” she explains. “Our aim at the spa is to complement and enhance the treatment our guests are undergoing at the clinic. They can also make use of the spa’s many facilities if they wish to.” “At Champneys, the emphasis is on wellness,” adds Dr Michael Curtin, medical director of Champneys Medical at Tring. “If a woman or couple comes to us to prepare for conception, we will look at lifestyle issues – such as nutrition, fitness, stress levels – and offer advice as well as appropriate treatments such as acupuncture, reflexology, massage or yoga. “For more in-depth testing, we would refer them

to the ARGC, but the clinic fits very well in to the Champneys concept of helping our guests to achieve optimal wellness.”
