a challenge for Vafiadis and her team, who skilfully integrated ambient lighting into their design. “Without any natural daylight in the space, the lighting we chose had a key role to play in creating the right ambience,” admits Vafiadis.

“Specially commissioned artwork was also a feature,

marking moments in the journey through the spa and playing its part in calming and rejuvenating the guest.”

A special journey Regardless of its intimate proportions, the spa journey was of paramount importance in the design process. “While the total spa area is not large, our design ensures that those who take it feel that they have participated in something which is very special and has touched all their senses,” says Vafiadis. “The spa’s strong contemporary lines, rich timbers and carefully orchestrated lighting cocoon guests and enable them to focus entirely on the relaxing, rejuvenating or invigorating experience that they seek.” At the heart of the city spa, offering what Vafiadis says is an “unexpected, Zen-like experience” is its hydrotherapy pool, supplied by BWT Austria. “The stainless steel cladding of the pool shimmers against the Alpine stone which surrounds it,” Vafiadis describes. “The pool area and steamrooms are filled with the sound of running water, masking any noise from the street above. It feels like an underground cave with a clear Alpine lake and waterfall, all within the warmth and comfort of a luxury spa.”
