we absorb.” Therefore the focus is on digestive health through a controlled diet and the intake of naturopathic remedies to stimulate the production of healthy gut fl ora. Herbal bitters and sauerkraut are taken before each meal, caffeine and alcohol are off the menu and specifi c carbs, steamed vegetables, optimum levels of protein (fi sh and chicken) and good fats are encouraged. Williams is quick to point out that this is not a punitive diet or regime, but is aimed at teaching participants how to incorporate restorative principles into their everyday lives.

External aids to internal health Questionnaires are sent out before guests arrive at Grayshott for a medical consultation that includes blood screening to measure glucose, cholesterol, Gamma GT, triglycerides and haemoglobin levels. Welcome sessions with a nutritionist and medical herbalist also help personalise the guest journey. As well as daily educational lectures to explain concepts such as good fats and complex carbohydrates, many meals are attended by a nutritionist or herbalist. There are two fast days during which few activities are scheduled and guests receive three therapeutic castor oil liver compresses. “Castor oil absorbs into top layers of the skin” explains Williams. “It is taken into

the lymphatic system and thins the lymphocytes down, helping to remove toxins.” Two abdominal massages throughout the week utilise

Grayshott’s Calming Oil which contains a blend of sweet fennel, coriander and cardamom essential oils to help regulate stomach functions, in particular excess or defi cient acid concentrations. “The oils, in combination with the specialised stomach massage, help to normalise peristalsis and stimulate a sluggish colon,” says Williams. “The massage also helps to relieve stomach tension as the digestive system is extremely vulnerable to stress and is known to contract and tighten as a response.” Hydro baths form part of the spa offering, aiding the

detoxifi cation processes by stimulating the lymphatic system and moving the toxins through faster. “This works by releasing sequential jets of water that massage the lymphatic system and speed up the fl ow of lymph.” These treatments are partnered with gentle exercise, tai chi and breathing classes, and guests can add other treatments according to their needs. Mentoring and support is provided during and after the retreat. The Grayshott Health Regime offers a therapeutic spa remedy for digestive health in the UK akin to those offered at European clinics like the Mayr Clinic in Austria. “I have wanted to develop a programme like this for some time,” Williams concludes.
