Bombardier has a long-standing presence in the UK and the company has been a driving force behind the evolution of rolling stock technology

ith a workforce of more than 3000 people and a presence at more than 30 locations throughout the UK,
Bombardier has built, or has on order, around 60 per cent of the UK’s rolling stock and is contracted to service more than 5000 of the UK’s vehicles. The company says it offers the broadest
product portfolio in the rail industry and delivers innovative products and services that set new standards in sustainable mobility – conserving energy, protecting the environment and improving total train performance for passengers and operators.
The best EMU technology In the regional and commuter sector, Bombardier has delivered more than 2,000 new generation Electrical Multiple Units (EMU's) for routes around London and the South East of England alone, with a proven track record and award-winning levels of reliability. The BOMBARDIER* ELECTROSTAR* is
carrying passengers daily on routes for train operators including Southern, Southeastern, Stansted Express, London Overground and c2c. Recent orders for additional vehicles for Southern and London Overground – 40 and 56 vehicles in December 2012 and May 2013 respectively - have confirmed the success of the train and are contributing to easing capacity on some of the UK’s most intensively used routes into the capital. Bombardier has also further evolved this platform with its next generation BOMBARDIER* AVENTRA* EMU, which incorporates latest environmental technologies for the UK market. Aventra meets ambitious targets, says the company, for weight reduction, increased capacity and improved energy efficiency, while offering outstanding reliability. Designed specifically for the challenges of
commuter services and the needs of today’s passengers, the Aventra train, incorporating the BOMBARDIER* FLEXX* Eco bogie is 20 per cent lighter than the Electrostar, which is already best-in-class relative to comparable EMU's in the UK market. This will also lead to reductions in track access charges. Although innovative, the philosophy of using systems that are proven in the global arena means that reliability is not an issue. Globally, Bombardier has more than 22 product platforms in the rolling stock market and an installed base of over 100,000 vehicles worldwide.

Other benefits from the Aventra
platform include enhanced propulsion, resulting in 1m/s2 acceleration, reduced net energy consumption of up to 46 per cent (when compared with a UK Class 319) and – as a result of leveraging Bombardier’s maintenance experience - pushing the boundaries for maintenance periodicity with bogies targeted to achieve one million miles between overhauls.
Bombardier Zefiro : very high speed trains Bombardier is well placed to take advantage of the opportunities in the high speed segment with its BOMBARDIER* ZEFIRO* very high speed train technology.
The Zefiro VHS train platform has a speed range from 250 to 380 kilometers per hour. As well as operating dependably at high speeds, the Zefiro train features an aerodynamic performance that draws on Bombardier’s sister company competence in the aerospace sector. The Zefiro platform incorporates the Bombardier Flexx speed bogie designed to meet the requirements for comfort and superior ride quality that are essential prerequisites for high performance suspension systems of high speed trains.
