Hunt for new Network Rail non-exec begins
NR is searching for a new non-executive director with specific significant railway experience after Graham Eccles’ decision to stand- down at the company’s AGM this month. Eccles, who will move on to become chairman of TXM Group, joined the NR board in 2010 after
nearly 45 years of operating, managing and directing Britain’s railway.
ScotRail gets green light for wind turbines
ScotRail has been granted permission to install two wind turbines at its Bathgate depot in West Lothian. This will be the first time wind turbines have been installed
at a ScotRail depot. The project will save almost eight tonnes of CO2 per year, as well as producing around 14,000 kWh of electricity - enough to power a small station like Greenfaulds.

The Crossrail project celebrated its biggest milestone so far as Elizabeth, one of its huge 1,000 tonne tunnelling machines, broke through into the new Canary Wharf station box. Crossrail’s eastern tunnelling machines, Elizabeth and Victoria, were launched from the Limmo Peninsula site near Canning Town towards the end of last year to create 8.3km (5.16 miles) of tunnels from east London to Farringdon – the project’s longest tunnel section. Over the past six months, both machines have been working round the clock to create the first section of new tunnels beneath the River Lea and east London towards the new Canary Wharf Crossrail station.
The huge Canary Wharf station box is 28 metres underground
and was designed and built by Canary Wharf Group, which is also delivering a four-storey retail development above the ticket hall and platform levels. The retail development will feature a roof-top garden, community facility and restaurant semi-covered by a Foster-designed timber lattice roof.
Elizabeth is now undergoing maintenance inside the station box before resuming tunnelling towards central London.
Crossrail is moving into the peak of construction between now and 2015 and the entire project is more than one-third complete. Key future milestones include:
• Completion of the first Crossrail tunnels by the end of 2013 - the 6km western section between Royal Oak and Farringdon
• Crossrail’s final two tunnel-boring machines launched later this year to begin further tunnelling work in Pudding Mill Lane, east London
• Archaeology work continuing at Crossrail sites including excavation of the Bedlam burial ground at Liverpool Street station
• Work nearing completion on the 34.5 metres deep Stepney Green shaft, one of Europe’s largest underground caverns - the two eastern tunnelling machines will pass through the shaft later this year.
